Soren Bradley is nine years old when Michael Whittaker cheerfully calls out “What’s up, Little Brad?” after Recitation, and Jonah’s face twists and the other boys go quiet.

The hand Soren raises to shake with his new Captain is knocked down when Britten claps him too hard on the shoulder, declares them good friends, and says “My buddy Jonah - I've told you about Brad - is so proud of his little brother!”

“Hey Brad,” Thea leans over the desk, talking over his attempt to introduce himself, “Britten said I should come say hello. What do you think about taking me to the Frolic this week?”

They’re stopped for a break, the comms channel has blessedly gone silent, and Kat and Brad are utterly alone in the cavern when he mumbles to himself in a dead voice: “My name is Soren.”

Calling him Soren wouldn't be appropriate at work, so Kat settles on calling him Cap from then on; it takes him a while to notice the change, but she knows when he realizes because he grins like an idiot when he thinks she can't see.
